Jerkinhead Roof Framing

The roof has two sides which are larger than the other two smaller sides.

The technique creates a less soaring more humble effect on residential architecture. It can either be thought of as a gable roof with hipped ends cut short with the points turning downward. Remember that a line on the framing plan indicating a rafter represents the total run of the rafter but not its actual length. Instead of rising to a point the gable is clipped short and appears to turn downwards. A jerkinhead roof uses elements of both gable and hip roofs. How ever some of the basic data used is different.

Jerkinhead roofs also known as clipped gables or snub gables are essentially a gable roof with the two peak ends are clipped off. The advantage of this design is that the clipped ends to reduce potential wind damage to the home making the roof more stable. The golden ratio or something close comes to mind where b is half the length of the fascia on the clip. A jerkinhead roof has a hipped gable.

Btw the pitch of the clipped roof can be altered to make it look and frame better also. On a hip roof framing plan the lines that. The peaks of the gable ends are clipped off to resemble a hip roof. The jerkinhead roof can be constructed of almost any roofing material even thatch.
